What happens during implant restoration?

Dr. Adam Shroyer of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, can restore the smile using dental implants. Implants act as tooth root replacements but still need to be restored over the top abutment to complete the process. There are several ways to replace missing teeth using dental implants and learning about these options helps patients decide if implants are appropriate for their unique dental needs.

How can I replace missing teeth after dental implants have been placed?

After an oral surgeon places dental implants, patients then return to Dr. Shroyer for the restoration of this prosthetic tooth root. There are a few different ways that he can do this, depending on how many teeth need to be replaced and where they are located in the mouth.

  • Dental crowns. The most common way to replace missing teeth is with dental crowns. A dental crown is a single tooth prosthetic that is placed over an implant (or a natural tooth). Dr. Shroyer will take impressions of your teeth and bite in order to create a model of your mouth. He will then use this model to create a custom dental crown that is the same color and shape as your other teeth. The crown will be placed over the implant, and you will have a brand new, beautiful tooth!
  • Dental bridges. If you are missing multiple teeth, Dr. Shroyer may recommend dental bridges. Dental bridges are made up of two or more dental crowns that are connected together, and they are used to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth. Dr. Shroyer will take impressions of your mouth and bite, just like he did for the dental crowns, and use these to create a model of your mouth. He will then use this model to create custom dental bridges that are the same color and shape as your other teeth. The bridges will be placed over the implants, and you will have a full set of beautiful teeth!
  • Dentures. Dentures are another option for replacing multiple missing teeth. Dentures are prosthetic teeth that are not attached to anything, and they can be taken out and put back in at any time. Dr. Shroyer will take impressions of your mouth and bite, just like he did for the dental crowns and bridges, and use these to create a model of your mouth. He will then use this model to create custom dentures that are the same color and shape as your other teeth. The dentures are placed in your mouth, and you will have a full set of beautiful teeth!
